RequirementsYou have graduated at Master’s level in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Materials Science, Physics, or Chemistry. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered meritorious; Semiconductor materials, Semiconductor Devices, Electron Microscopy. You should possess excellent analytical skills, a genuine interest in interdisciplinary research, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You are expected to have very good communication skills in English, both spoken and written. You are self-motivated, communicative, helpful and committed to your work. Imperial College London - Earth Science and Engineering
 London, United Kingdom
Post-doctoral Research Associate in Mineral Magnetism
Announcement date: 07 October 2025 - Deadline for application: 14 November 2025DescriptionThis 30 month Post-Doctoral Research Associate position is part of the UKRI NERC project “Can rocks palaeomagnetically record palaeo-stress?”, which investigates how natural magnetic systems respond to stress at the nanometre scale. Recent modelling shows that modest stresses (~0.1 GPa), typical of active fault zones, can modify supposedly stable magnetic records—challenging long-held assumptions. At Imperial and Jülich (Germany), you will focus on experimental magnetic imaging using advanced transmission electron microscopy, particularly off-axis electron holography, alongside focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) nanotomography and complementary magnetic analyses. Working with Adrian Muxworthy (Imperial), Wyn Williams (Edinburgh), Tom Mitchell (UCL) and Rafal Dunin-Borkowski (Jülich), you will quantify stress-induced magnetic changes and contribute to a predictive framework for stress-related magnetisation, with implications for earthquake hazard assessment. Requirements• You will have extensive knowledge of detailed knowledge of a range of electron microscopy methods including TEM magnetic imaging and FIB slice-and-view, and sample preparation for these methods. • You will have published or submitted several first author peer-reviewed scientific papers. • You will be comfortable working independently, with several visits to Jülich Germany. • You will have a PhD in Material Science, Earth Science or Physics or comparable subjects. No previous knowledge of Earth Science is required. More informationContactAdrian Muxworthy Dept. of Earth Science & Engineering, Imperial College London, London, UK.

 PhD position in Neuroscience
Announcement date: 06 October 2025DescriptionIn this project, you will contribute to both engineering and neurobiology. First, you will help build a light-sheet microscope optimized for voltage imaging at the single-cell and subcellular level in live larval zebrafish (1). The development of this system will be supported by Dr. Emmanuel Marquez Legorreta↗, Dr. Ernest van der Wee↗, and the Biology Image Center↗ team. Once the microscope is established, you will use it to investigate the electrophysiological properties of cerebellar Purkinje cells with advanced voltage indicators such as Voltron2. The ultimate goal is to uncover how Purkinje cells alter their dendritic signaling and spiking characteristics under different sensory or chemogenetic conditioning paradigms, and to determine how these changes may be mediated through intrinsic plasticity or brain state. Requirements- You hold, or are about to complete, a Master’s degree in Biology or Engineering. In a program that requires two internships, students who have completed their first internship are also encouraged to apply!
- Has an interdisciplinary background. Previous microscopy training is a strong asset.
- Demonstrates a strong interest in, or prior experience with, neuroscience.
- You bring enthusiasm for live imaging at single-cell and subcellular level in larval zebrafish.
- Have programming skills or a strong willingness to learn them.
- Speak and write proficient academic English.

PhD Position in AI for Transmission Electron Microscopy Image
Announcement date: 22 September 2025DescriptionThe Electron Microscopy of Materials (EMM) unit at Linköping University invites applications for a PhD position at the intersection of AI and advanced electron microscopy. The project focuses on developing novel self-supervised and physics-informed deep learning methods to restore and denoise Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and HAADF-STEM images. The goal is to achieve more robust, interpretable, and scientifically meaningful reconstructions of atomic-resolution microscopy data. This position is part of a cross-disciplinary effort supported by the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) and the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), providing a unique opportunity to work within a strong Swedish research network spanning materials science, AI, and computational imaging. Submission is possible until: 17 October 2025 Requirements- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Materials Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related fields
- Strong interest in AI for scientific imaging, self-supervised learning, and image restoration
- Experience in deep learning (CNNs, transformers, or INRs) and scientific programming
- Good analytical and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Experience with microscopy data or inverse problems is a merit
