• International Federation of Societies for Microscopy (IFSM)

  The International Federation of Societies for Microscopy's (IFSM) aim is to contribute to the advancement of microscopy in all its aspects. It comprises microscopy societies from all around the world.

  The most important activity of IFSM is the sponsorship of the most important series of meetings on microscopy: the International Microscopy Congress (the IMC) is held every 4 years. IFSM also supports young scientists to attend meetings of our Members.
  
  Activities between the IMCs are managed by the IFSM Executive Board which is led by the President, the Immediate Past President (Vice-President) and the General Secretary. The General Assembly takes place every 4 years at the IMC. At that time, the General Assembly selects the site for the next IMC from proposals submitted by Members of IFSM.

• Interamerica Committee for Societies for Microscopy (CIASEM)

  The purpose of the CIASEM shall be to increase and diffuse, for scientific and educational goals, the science, practice and instrumentation of microscopy, on the American continent.

  CIASEM is a regional umbrella organization with responsibility to:

  • hold an Interamerican Congress of Microscopy every two years.
  • sponsor and organize regional meetings and conferences
  • publish Acta Microscopica
  • appoint the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Microscopica
  • set up committees and other bodies
  • initiate, promote and co-ordinate exchange programs between member societies and with societies having related interests in other continents
  • participate in joint committees with other scientific bodies in matters of interest to CIASEM.

• Committee for Asia-Pacific Societies for Electron Microscopy (CAPSM)

  CAPSM was founded to foster the development of all aspects of electron microscopy by supporting existing activities and stimulating new ones. The Committee supports and initiates specialised meeting, symposia and workshops.  CAPSM also assists individual researchers and regional research groups in meeting their needs such as technical staff training, while facilitating the interchange of information from past meetings.

• Microscopy Listserver

  The Microscopy Listserver is an international E-mail based discussion forum whose purpose has been, since its establishment in 1993, to give the scientific community a centralized location to which questions/comments/answers in the various fields of Microscopy & Microanalysis can be rapidly distributed to a list of interested individuals and organizations. The Listserver has been operating continuously for 12 years and has subscribers from over 40 countries on 6 continents, who participate in this system on a daily basis. On average 10 messages are posted and circulated daily on a variety of topics. 
  Detailed information on the operating policies and rules, settings for your E-mail programs, topics for content as well as access to the Listserver Archives (containing all 12 years worth of discussion) are also available on-line.

  Sample preparation is of central importance for the characterization of materials by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a guide to researchers seeking practical and up-to-date information on TEM sample preparation, we have created the internet website http://temsamprep.in2p3.fr/

  This website is dedicated to TEM sample preparation in Materials Science, Earth Science and Biology. Designed in French and now translated into English, this website is accessible free of charge.

  The site contains an interactive educational guide comprising a database of materials that provides an automated guide to the choice of the most suitable TEM sample preparation technique based on materials properties and type of analysis. At present, the guide covers 36 sample preparation techniques with important information on the basic principle, materials, procedure, artefacts, advantages, drawbacks, as well as the specific equipment required for each technique. It has been designed to include new techniques as they are being developed.

  The website also contains a database with images of different types of materials and of artefact produced by sample preparation techniques. This image database has been designed to be interactive and will be augmented by new images of various materials from the user community.

  In addition, the site maintains a calendar of events with announcements of workshops, meeting dates, special events on TEM and sample preparation techniques, and general TEM news.
