EMS NEWSLETTER 5
EMS Secretariat, February 13, 2003 Dear EMS member, A few months have elapsed since the previous EMS Newsletter appeared. A short version of this Newsletter has been printed in Imaging & Microscopy 4, 46 (2002), a journal published by GIT verlag ( http://www.gitverlag.com ). With these newletters we plan to keep you informed about microscopy events in Europe and the development of EMS as a new European Society. EMS is the successor of CESM or CESEM, an umbrella organisation taking care of quadrennial European Electron Microscopy Congresses. Who are the members of EMS? Many national microscopy societies have supported our initiative by joining EMS by en-bloc membership, meaning that every member is also a member of EMS. As a membership fee they have paid an extra € 5 to their membership fee of the national microscopy society. Most societies have transmitted an electronic version of their membership list and some societies are still considering the situation, or have informed us that they are not willing to join. Countrywise, the present EMS membership is composed as follows: Belgium (130), Croatia (46), Czech and Slovak Republic (189), France (280), Greece (61), Italy (262), Ireland (60), Israel (213), Netherlands (498), Poland (68), Russia (8), Slovenia (41), Spain (160), Switzerland (325), Turkey (136), UK (EMAG and RMS, 409), Yugoslavia (53) and Germany (105), or a total of 3044 members. All these members should receive this newsletter in printed or electronic form, provided that up-to-date email addresses and postal addresses are available to us. Since EMS has adopted email as the preferred means of communication with its members, it is essential to have a current email address of each individual member. EMS-extension to the Pula microscopy congress: June 1 – 5, 2003 The 6th Multinational Congress on Microscopy with European Extension (6th MCM.EE) is jointly organized by the Croatian, Austrian, Czechoslovak, Hungarian, Italian and Slovenian Societies for Microscopy in cooperation with the European Microscopy Society. The purpose of an EMS-extension is to offer European microscopists an opportunity to meet once a year. EMS will sponsor the meeting with two invited speakers, who will deliver “EMS lectures” to be published in the EMS Yearbook. This congress will be hosted by the Croatian Society for Electron Microscopy. It will take place in the Congress Centre of hotel Histria, located in the outskirts of the ancient town of Pula (Istria, Croatia). The Congress will offer five days of plenary lectures, symposia with invited speakers, oral and poster contributions, a technical forum and a round table discussion. All microscopy topics in material sciences, life sciences, imaging and instrumentation will be covered. Recent microscopy equipment, accessories and products will be exhibited. EMS members are cordially invited to contribute to the scientific programme and send an abstract and register as a participant. An excursion and social events will be organized. Further information can be obtained from the President of the 6th MCM.EE Organising Committee, Dr. Ognjen Milat < milat@ifs.hr > or at the congress website: < http://www.ifs.hr/mcm/index.php >. The deadline for abstract submission is February 28th. The next European Microscopy Congress: EMC 2004 in Antwerp, August 22 – 27, 2004 (previously EUREM) The preparations for EMC 2004 are moving along as expected. Over 4000 first circulars have been distributed with the much appreciated help of the different national societies. The circular is available in PDF-format at < http://www.emc2004.be >. A poster will be distributed in February. By now, a large number of expressions of interest have been filed by scientific delegates as well as commercial exhibitors. Meanwhile, the programme committee has received several interesting and valuable suggestions from its members as well as from the International Scientific Advisory Board and the EMS Executive. With these, we are compiling an exciting scientific programme, including regular oral and poster sessions, courses, open question slots and special interest lectures. The latter feature is a novelty at the European microscopy meetings. The second circular is scheduled for September 2003. All those who have sent an expression of interest will receive a copy. This circular will contain all necessary information about registration, abstract submission, accommodation, social events etc. The deadline for early registration and abstract submission will be February 2004. EMS will sponsor the meeting by contributing to the expenses of two invited speakers. During the congress, two prestigious Ernst Ruska Prizes will be awarded to talented, young microscopists. As for the commercial delegates, detailed pricing and conditions for the exhibition, advertisements and other possible ways of sponsoring the meeting will be available early 2003. Exhibitors and sponsors who expressed an interest, will receive this information. For the latest news or for filing your expression of interest in an easy electronic way, visit < http://www.emc2004.be >. A new microscopy society: the Polish Society for Microscopy (PTMi) The Polish Society for Microscopy was recently created. This event was supported by the President of EMS, Prof. Jose Carrascosa, who participated in a meeting of the Committee for Electron Microscopy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in October 2001 in Krakow. The new constitution of the PTMi was accepted by all PTMi members. The aim of the PTMi is to encourage microscopy in Poland, to organize and to support microscopy conferences, regularly organized in Poland since 1953, together with specialized workshops. At present, the PTMi has 68 members. A General Assembly elected the Executive Board and decided to join EMS. The President is Prof. Aleksandra Czyrska-Filemonowicz, her email address is < czyrska@uci.agh.edu.pl >. The official address of the Society is:Polish Society for Microscopy,University of Mining and Metallurgy (AGH),Al. Mickiewicza 30,PL-30059 Krakow,Poland. The PTMi is organizing the 1st Stanislaw Gorczyca Summer School on Transmission Electron Microscopy. This is planned to be an international event, especially organized for the benefit of PhD students and young electron microscopists. By organizing this Summer School, the PTMi would like to honor Prof. Gorczyca and emphasise his important contributions. The official language of this meeting will be English. For further infomation contact < gmichta@uci.agh.edu.pl >. The School, to be held in the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow, will be composed of
EMS NEWSLETTER 4
EMS Secretariat, October 2, 2002 Dear EMS member, Several important microscopy conferences have been held during the past months. With regard to EMS, these were the multinational meeting in Lille, France and the international microscopy meeting in Durban, South Africa. During the Lille meeting, the annual General Assembly of EMS was held, and in Durban the Executive Board of EMS had a meeting. The following text contains a report on these two meetings. We would appreciate hearing your opinion! Minutes of the General Assembly of the European Microscopy Society Lille, 27 June 2002 The annual general meeting (AGM) of the EMS was held during the Joint Microscopy Meeting in Lille, which brought together members of the French, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss microscopy societies and had been selected for European extension by the EMS. The AGM was presided by Dr Jose CARRASCOSA in the presence of Prof L. Ginsel, treasurer and P.W. Hawkes, former president. Presentation of the activities of the EMS. After listing the various activities of the Society since the last AGM (in Lecce, September 2001) and evoking the problems of voting at forthcoming elections via Internet, J.L. Carrascosa announced that the congress selected for European Extension in 2003 is the Sixth Multi-national Congress on Microscopy, to be held in Pula (Croatia). Dr Milat was then invited to present this congress and the first circular was distributed. Membership and accounts. L. Ginsel announced that the EMS has at present 3,300 members and that the credit balance is at present 28,525 euros. Further details of income and expenditure were shown. Yearbook and Newsletter. P.W. Hawkes described the situation of the Yearbook and insisted on the need to maintain an up-to-date membership list, including e-mail addresses. No firm decision has yet been taken concerning the printed newsletter, which is already being distributed by e-mail to all members with a current address. European Microscopy Congress, 2004. The sequence of events that led to the withdrawal of the bid for EMC-2004 by the Israeli Society for Microscopy, in the hope that an EMC can be held in Jerusalem at a future date, and the acceptance of the bid by the Belgian Society were described succinctly by J.L. Carrascosa. The dates of the meeting are unchanged. EMC-2004 will be held in Antwerp, with D. Schryvers as principal organizer. The first circular will be distributed at ICEM in Durban. Any other business. In reply to a question from a member, concerning the role of national societies in the affairs of the EMS, J.L. Carrascosa recalled that the EMS has individual members, although close liaison is maintained with national societies. Attempts continue to involve the commercial companies in the activities of the EMS. Efforts are continuing to organize EMS specialized workshops, summer schools and similar events. Minutes of the EMS Executive Board meeting held during the 15th International Congress on Electron Microscopy at 12.15 – 15.30 hrs on Tuesday September 3d, 2002 in the IFSEM Executive Board Room in the International Conference Center, Durban, South Africa. Present: Carrascosa (Madrid), Ginsel (Nijmegen), Wisse (Brussels), Frank (Brno), Hebert (Huddinge), Hutchison (Oxford), Hax (Eindhoven), Schryvers (Antwerpen) Excused: Hawkes (Toulouse), Vittori (Rome)Chair: CarrascosaReport: Wisse Agenda EMS extension in Lille 2002 EMS extension in Pula 2003 EMC 2004 Antwerpen Coordination of multinational microscopy meetings in Europe Yearbook and its future EMS Newsletter and G.I.T + future EMS Foundation Membership and administration of members Yearly contributions and finances Ernst Ruska Prize Corporate membership Electronic voting Server and website should probably be moved summer 2003 Any other points to be discussed 1. The meeting in Lille, organized by the French, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss Societies for microscopy was successful. After the signing of an agreement between the Organizers of the meeting and EMS, EMS supported this multinational meeting by sponsoring two invited speakers. Through the EMS Newsletter and announcements on the EMS website, participants from other countries in Europe were encouraged to attend this meeting and its “EMS-extension” on the same conditions as the participants of the organizing societies. During an EMS-General Assembly meeting to which all participants were invited, the main activities of EMS were explained and discussed. These concerned: the second edition of the Yearbook, the EMS Newsletter, the transfer of EMC 2004 from Jerusalem to Antwerpen and corporate membership of EMS. 2. The agreement between EMS and the Organizing Comittee of the 6th Multinational Congress on Microscopy in Pula, Croatia, June 1 – 5, 2003 has been signed. Again, EMS will support the meeting by sponsoring (the equivalent of) two invited speakers. An International Advisory Board has been composed, together with a list of session chairmen, invited speakers and topics for sessions. A daily time schedule has been composed for the meeting, which will start on Sunday June 1st and will end on Thursday after lunch time. A web site is in operation, where further details can be obtained: < http://www.6mcm.kbsm.hr >. 3. The European Microscopy Congress (EMC) 2004 has started its organization. The Organizing Committee, chaired by Dr. Nick Schryvers, has produced an attractive first announcement. The change of names, from EUREM (European Electron Microscopy Congress) to EMC does not seem to be obvious to many delegates and in future announcements of the meeting it should be made clear that EMC is the future equivalent of the past EUREM meetings and that the meeting is an EMS meeting (EMS logo!), EMS being the successor of CES(E)M. The dates for the meeting have been fixed: August 22nd till 27, an International Scientific Advisory Board has been established, the venue for the meeting has been chosen, the Organizing Committee and its sub-committees (e.g. for the Programme, Exhibition and Proceedings) have been formed. A web site is operational: < http://www.emc2004.be >. A second circular will be distributed September 2003. Student rooms will be available, as well as two computer class-rooms with 2 x 50 PC’s, providing many internet connections for the participants. Open labs and discussion panels are planned, as well as a historical exhibition of old microscopes. The pre-registration fee will be
EMS NEWSLETTER 3
EMS Secretariat, June 18, 2002 Dear EMS member, The EMS has experienced a few important developments since the previous newsletters of November (2001) and March (2002). You can read the text of these EMS Newsletters (including this one) and other information about EMS at the web site (URL see above). EMS extension at the Joint Microscopy Meeting in Lille, France, June 25 – 28, 2002 The French, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss Societies for Microscopy are organizing a multinational meeting in Lille, France. The EMS is supporting the scientific program by financing two invited speakers, who will deliver an “EMS lecture” at the meeting. These lectures will be printed in the EMS Yearbook. EMS members are welcome at this meeting in the same way as members of the organizing societies. Further information about the meeting is provided in the previous EMS Newsletter or at the congress web site:< http://www.eudil.fr/sfmu/ >. During the meeting in Lille, an EMS General Assembly meeting wil be held on Thursday afternoon. At this meeting the President, Secretary and Treasurer will report on their activities. A discussion will be held on the change of venue of EMC 2004. For further details on the exact hour and place of the meeting, have a look at the announcements during the Lille meeting. All EMS members are invited to attend this meeting. EMS extension at the Joint Microscopy Meeting in Pula, Croatia, June 1 – 5, 2003 The microscopy societies of Croatia, Austria, Czech and Slovak Republic, Hungary, Italy and Slovenia are joining efforts in organizing the 6 th MCM (Multinational Congress on Microscopy). Members of the EMS are invited to participate in this congress and contribute to the scientific program as if they were members of the organizing societies. EMS is supporting the scientific program by financing invited speakers, who will deliver an “EMS lecture” at the meeting. The 6 th MCM is being organized in Pula on the Adriatic coast June 1 – 5, 2003. The organizer of the meeting is Dr. Ongjen Milat < milat@IFS.HR >. More information can be obtained at the web site of the meeting: < http://www.6mcm.kbsm.hr >. European Microscopy Congress, EMC 2004, Antwerpen, Belgium, August 23 – 27, 2004 Owing to the developments in Near East it was agreed during an EMS General Assembly in Lecce, September 2002, that in January and April 2002, the EMS should stepwise decide on a possible change of venue. To all parties involved it was clear that the situation in Jerusalem, where the meeting was planned to be held, was such that there was real doubt that a congress in this city would be successful. The EMS president sent a letter to all European Societies for Microscopy, asking for their help in taking over the work done so far by the Israeli Organizing Committee. The Executive Board of EMS received three proposals and on the 18 th of April, a telephone conference was organised in which all members of the Executive Board participated. After this discussion, the unanimous decision was taken to accept the offer of the Belgian Society to organize EMC 2004 (European Microscopy Congress) in Antwerpen. The date of the Congress has not been changed: August 23-27, 2004. Presently, the International Advisory Board is being composed, and soon the agreement between EMS and the Organising Committee in Antwerpen will be signed. A web site with current information is under construction. The First Announcement will be distributed at ICEM15 in Durban. We have to thank our Israeli colleagues for all the work they have done in preparation of EMC 2004 and express the hope that peace will be restored in the area soon. Yearbook 2002 Thanks to the continuing efforts of Dr. Peter Hawkes and the firm ERI in the Paris region, the EMS Yearbook 2002 will appear very soon. All members of EMS who have supplied an up-to-date address should receive a copy of this Yearbook for free. The Yearbook is a rich source of information about the EMS membership, about companies involved in microscopy and about the organization of microscopy (societies) in Europe. In case you have any remark or contribution in this field, please contact Peter Hawkes < hawkes@cemes.fr > or the EMS secretary (email see above). EMS membership After the last newsletter, the EMS membership has been growing. At present we have more than 3000 members, living in nineteen countries: Belgium (130 members), Czech and Slovak Republic (139), France (369), Germany (120), Greece (60), Italy (340), Ireland (30), Israel (213), The Netherlands (498), Russia (21), Spain (159), Switzerland (325), Turkey (136), UK (EMAG and RMS, 411) and Yugoslavia (63). Other societies are “on their way” to EMS, such as Croatia (57), Hungary ( 172), Slovenia (66), making a grand total of 3300 members. We hope that the Scandinavian microscopists will soon join the EMS. For some societies it is apparently difficult to collect the Euro 5 EMS membership fee, but there is a possibility to obtain a reduction for a restricted period of time (cf. the EMS Constitution). Another difficulty is the fact that all correspondence between EMS and its members is through email. About half of the members have an email address. Unfortunately, a number of email addresses are no longer correct. For this reason we are attempting to improve the database of email addresses of the EMS membership. In connection with the publication of the next Yearbook a large number of updated addresses have been received. In addition to the Yearbook we will also publish a printed version of the EMS Newsletter (see below). Printed version of the EMS Newsletter, cooperation with G.I.T. Verlag The EMS Executive Board and G.I.T. Verlag have agreed to distribute EMS information in the journal Imaging & Microscopy. You can find an interview with the past and present EMS President in the last issue of Imaging & Microscopy. The G.I.T. website can be found at: < http://www.GITverlag.com >. We hope this cooperation will develop into a symbiosis, beneficial to both parties. MicroScience 2002, London, ExCel Conference Centre, July 9 – 11, 2002 The organizers of
EMS NEWSLETTER 1
EMS Secretariat, November 7, 2001 To all members of the EMS Dear colleague, This is the first email to be sent to every member of EMS. After a long period of formal arrangements and negotiations, several microscopy societies in Europe have decided to adopt the procedure known as en-bloc membership, whereby their own members also become members of EMS. In this procedure, members pay Euro 5 and the societies assist EMS in collecting the annual fee and also make their list of members and email addresses available to EMS in electronic form. This procedure keeps administrative costs low and makes it possible for EMS to operate. It should be emphasized however, that EMS is a European society with individual members. Individual membership is also available and regular mail is then dispatched directly by the secretary of EMS. The annual fee for individual members is Euro 25, because of the higher costs. At present, EMS has 1,561 paid-up members. The en-bloc membership concerns the microscopy societies of Belgium, the Czech and Slovak Republic, France, Greece, Israel, The Netherlands and Spain. An additional nine microscopy societies in Croatia, UK (EMAG), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Turkey and Yugoslavia have decided for en-bloc membership. Their members will bring the total membership of EMS to 2,500 or more. More details about EMS are available at our new website: http://www.eurmicsoc.org This website is supported by a server, to which your messages, opinions and and corrections may be sent via the address: ems@eurmicsoc.org Of course the frequently asked question is: what does EMS offer to its members? For the moment the advantages concern: the membership of a large scale microscopy society the quadrennial EMC (European Microscopy Congress), for which the EMS members pay a much reduced fee the annual Yearbook, free of charge the yearly European EMS-extension to one of the regional meetings for microscopy, for which the EMS members pay a reduced fee the workshops which are going to be organized by EMS, for which the EMS members will pay a reduced fee the EMS Newsletter, to be published by email, available on the EMS website and distributed in printed form in one of the microscopy- oriented journals, free of charge More details about the realizations and plans of EMS can be found in the attached document, which contains a report on the General Assembly meeting of EMS, held during the first European extension to a regional meeting (the 5th MCEM), which took place in Lecce Italy, September 20 – 25 (2001).
